Genesis defined, is life from lifelessness. One could say that it was an apt name, for SEGA's second foray into the home gaming console business in North America. Their first attempt, the SEGA Master System was a sales failure on these shores, pounded into the bargain bins by the relentless juggernaut of the NES. The SEGA Genesis was their mostly successful attempt at providing real competition for the Big N. With rock solid sports titles, and other action games to drive sales, the SEGA Genesis was a sales success. With the release of Sonic the HedgeHog, SEGA had a marketable mascot, to rival Mario. In addition to a rock solid game library, over the life of the Genesis, SEGA released expansions for the popular system, with the SEGA CD and eventually the 32X. SEGA was never able to get these expansions to catch on, and found that it had the undesirable effect of fragmenting their customer base. The SEGA CD suffered from an embarassment of cheesy FMV games, and it took too long for some great titles to come out for it. The 32X, while capable, made the Genesis an unweildy odd looking, multi AC adaptered Frankenstein. By fragmenting their market, and ditching support for their 32X expansion so soon after it's release, SEGA left a bad taste in the mouths of gamers, possibly sending them on the road to eventually leaving the console market altogether. Nevertheless, the SEGA Genesis is a pleasure to own, and fun to collect for inexpensively. There are excellent games for the base system, and all of it's expansions. The Phantasy Star series, Sonic the Hedgehog games, and many more make this system a great gamers system.
